Editorial Policy

Mission

Nawafith is an open-source intelligence platform for Syria. It monitors 537 sources across all 14 governorates and turns fragmented reporting into structured insight.

This is not a news outlet. Nawafith does not publish original journalism. It aggregates, classifies, and analyzes publicly available information to help researchers, analysts, and observers track what is happening on the ground.

Independence

Nawafith was built and is run by one person: Karam Alhamad, a Syrian-German analyst with an MPP from Yale Jackson School. There is no editorial board, no staff, no government backing, and no faction alignment.

No advertiser funds this platform. No political group has conditional access to coverage. Editorial decisions are made by one analyst, and that analyst's background is publicly documented.

This is a feature, not a disclosure. A single accountable voice is easier to audit than an opaque institutional one.

Source Methodology

Nawafith tracks 537 sources covering Syria's 14 governorates. Each source is tagged by faction type: governmental, neutral, Kurdish, international, regional, or NGO. Sources are also assigned a reliability tier based on track record and transparency.

Sources are scored, not just listed. The faction tag does not mean a source is excluded or discounted. It means its alignment is visible. Readers can review the full source list, including metadata and reliability scores, on the Sources page.

How AI Is Used

Several AI models handle different parts of the pipeline. Here is what each does:

Entity extraction — pulls people, places, and organizations from incoming articles automatically.

Translation — Arabic-to-English and English-to-Arabic via local models, running on-device without third-party APIs.

Classification — assigns governorate and topic tags to each article.

Sentiment analysis — tracks tone across sources to surface shifts in how events are being framed.

Knowledge graph — maps relationships between 3,200+ entities: people, organizations, locations, and events.

Report generation — AI drafts analysis based on aggregated data. A human reviews and edits before publication.

AI models make mistakes. They hallucinate. They miss context. That is why nothing gets published without a human pass. The AI does the heavy lifting on volume; the analyst does the judgment calls.

Corrections

Errors happen. When one is found, it gets corrected immediately and the change is visible. If you spot something wrong, email [email protected]. Every flag gets reviewed.

Conflict of Interest

There is no external funding, no advertising, and no faction paying for coverage. The founder's background is public: Yale MPP, Syrian-German, founder of the ZeFi Foundation. Any relevant affiliation or relationship that could affect analysis will be disclosed in the relevant report.
