A year ago, Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived at the UN with Syria still divided by competing armed forces, millions of people displaced and international sanctions constraining its economy. Sept. 23, 2026, he returned to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) with a very different message. Over 3.5 million Syrians returned home, he said.
